Ditto to that. Trim off just the tip, and they tend to get squirmy when they're having their nails trimmed, or at least mine do, so have a very steady hand! Be sure to have the styptic   powder on hand, like Kwik Stop...you can usually find it at any pet store.
I always keep rough rocks in my tanks to help keep their nails filed, eliminating the need for most nail trimmings. They hate it, as do I, so it's win win.
