lighting question

Do I need to buy the expensive "reptile" flourescent lights or is there a cheaper alternative for uvb? $20 every 6 mos seems awful expensive. When I was into aquatic plants the full spectrum lights from home depot were much cheaper than the petstore lights and did the job just as well.
