Hi Ange ~ The turtle at the time of that photo had been in captivity for about three months. I should note that when released, in one season or so, a large snapper will be back to its natural (aggressive if you will) behaviour.
I've been fortunate to work with several large Snapping turtles (male and female) from one specific remote location in Massachusetts (for instance, that photo is of me over Ten years ago) and have found this to be the case in all of the individuals kept and released.
