This is from an email sent out to all ASIH (American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists) members earlier today:
This website has information on zoos, museums, and aquaria in the region affected by Katrina: http://www.aam-us.org/aamlatest/news/HurricaneFirstReports.cfm
Dr. Betsy Dresser has been in direct contact with Dan Maloney, General Curator at the Audubon Zoo. Dan and a staff of 11 are on site. Dr. Dresser reports that the staff are in good spirits and that they have supplies and some fuel. They do not believe there is a need to move the animals from the Zoo at present. The Zoo is coordinating its future supply needs through Dr. Dresser, who will coordinate with AZA.
In the past 24 hours, staff had to vacate the Aquarium of the Americas, as it is located in an area of the city where there is much looting and violence. Ron Forman, however, is on site at the Aquarium and is coordinating his efforts to keep the Aquarium safe through the police and the firemen. There is some fuel for some of the generators. Once the area around the Aquarium stabilizes, Aquarium staff will be able to return to the facility.
