I do the same thing....no hygrometer and few thermometers. I started out trying to measure humidity/temp but did not invest in fancy digital equiptment and bought cheap stick on type devices that basically just fell off the wall when stuck on by the provided adhesive. I never replaced them because they didn't seem to be accurate. I have drilled a hole into my cages to insert a cheap Coralife digital therm.'s probe and placed the probe under the warm hide between the newsprint and sphagnum moss. I also use a temp gun to measure temp. I think a temp gun is a must, and wish I had purchased one before spending the money on those silly analog thermometers I originally bought with the hygrometers. The outside mounted digi therm.'s give me a reference point that I see many times daily, and if needed I can spot check with the gun. I always have some condensation on some outside surface and judge humidity by what I see. If you aren't confident in guessing I would recommed a digital hygrometer.
Sounds to me like you are on the right track! Good luck, and welcome to Rainbows! -----
