A lot of different bromeliads have purple leaves, especially in strong light. From your description, a wild guess might be Vresia. You probably handled the planting just fine, although the soil was probably not essential, just the sphagnum.
Where did you get your ground cover? It is really essential to identify it before guessing what the problem might be or whether it will recover after losing its leaves or even grow in the vivarium at all. I wish you could post some pictures of some of this stuff. We are really simply making WAGS otherwise that may not even be close and not help you much. ----- Patty
