The most basic way to scent a mouse is to simply rub it on the toad. Many people have come up with different variations on scenting. I recommend soaking the mouse in water (if it was not previously frozen and being thawed out) to hopefully remove as much of the "mouse smell" as possible.



I have always recommended keeping a live toad "as a pet" for a continual source of scenting. The best method by far, I have ever found, is by trying to get the toad to eat the mouse. Captive toads will quickly learn that food is delivered on the end of hemostats and will have no problems trying to bite on to a pinky. For some reason, the saliva of the toad is the most reactive substance for an Eastern hognose. Otherwise, check out the link below for other methods such as using canned tuna!
