Hello everyone,
This is my first post here on this particular forum. I just bought a little firebellied newt today.
He is in a 3 gallon filtered tank, with the filter set on lowest flow. The substrate is sand, and I have a fake plant and one live fern in there (going to have more live plants tomorrow- a friend is giving me clippings from his many planted tanks. I want to have it densly planted.). There is a polyresin branch that extends out of the water for him. The water is filled up about 6.5 inches. There is a compact flourescent over it (incandescent got too hot) and the water temps are about 68-70 degrees.
Right when I put him in, he went right for the branch and has planted himself as far out of the water as he could get on it, and there he has sat for the few hours i've had him home. Now, right now I'm not too worried. I know animals need time to adjust to their new surroundings. When would I have to start to worry if he doesnt start to go in the water at all? I just want to plan ahead just in case. I have in the past kept a few amphibians, but this guy is the first newt i've ever had
