in my opinion, tangerines are the animals at one end of the continuum, tricolors at the other, and there are animals in between because it's not an either-or situation. Personally, I categorize my albinos as tangerines, tricolors, and "semi-tangerine," the latter just being a catch phrase for the in-betweens. To me, a tangerine has to have colors that approximate each other, in exceptional cases they match. They're usually orange to orange-red. To me, if the narrow (mid-triad) ring is white, cream, yellow, or gold, the animal's a tricolor; when that ring gets orange you can start entertaining its being a tangerine, and as it approaches the color of the wide rings you can be sure. But those are just my opinions. I see others characterizing their animals quite differentlly--certainly a lot of people call animals tangerine albinos that i sure don't think deserve that term. I guess it helps sell them, or helps get a premium price. But i always marvel that people will buy based on what someone CALLS something rather than what they can see for themselves in the photos.

I'd consider the animal pictured here to be a tangerine. It's just a quick grab from my photo files, some tangerines have fewer triads and wider rings and i personally prefer those; some people have specifically requested these high-triad, narrow ring animals. It's all personal preference.

Others may disagree.
