Well I was able to let mine go for about 8 months without haveing a mineral clog and I live in an area with hard water. I also make my own filter cartrage around my pump so I dont run into any problems with debris. Over time yours will probaibly get clogged and may stop working aswell depending on your substrate. I eventually got fed up with that waterfall and now make my own out of shale.
