I think, as I am a practitioner of such spurious arts, is because people DO go for the "big guys" thinking (however correctly, or incorrectly) that they are somehow more reputable, or have better stock because they are more successful. This is not always the case, as many of us know. It is actually a common practice throughout business marketing to use the "Royal 'We'." Think about when you write a resume: you're the only one writing it, and it's about you, yet traditionally it is written in 3rd person ("Jeremy has developed skills in field-a through extensive work experience and is seeking employment where his aptitudes may be more fully utilized..." that kind of language) and tha'ts what is expected by employers.
This is sort of the same thing. It comes down to a marketing preference and/or strategy. I don't think anything is inherently wrong with it, although sometimes it feels strange to write that way, and sometimes I slip into 1st person myself.
