Man you're asking trade secrets! LOL
I use the mid third of a young adult mouse tail because length is an issue and the middle third is the best mix of width to length and yes before we had kids I did have too much time on my hands.
Every other feeding is supplimented by dipping the small end into an even mix of RepCal and Herpitovite.
As the first one or two feedings might actually be force feedings, I lubricate the large end with tap water. Generally the snake will start swollowing on its own by the third feeding "IF" I continue to restrain its body. Don't know why this works but it does. After four or five feedings I can generally put them back in their boxes as soon as they start swallowing.
The real key to this, besides not having too many, is that they never get to see, smell, taste or however they sence a skink. Once they've had skink they imprint on them and in my experience will alway prefer them over mice. If they don't learn any better they become robust rodent feeders the rest of there lives.
