sick coachwhip???

I've got a coachwhip who's being treated for a mild case of mouthrot. But I have noticed lately that he seems to be puffing up his lower throat, just past the jaw for about 1-2 inches, this puffing/expansion can also be seen from above as it also pushes the sides out slightly.



What I'm wondering is has anyone else noticed this with coachwhips as it may be normal,when they are under stress, but none of my other 3 do this.
