I made a little trip to northeast TX yesterday.
What hides in this murky lair?

.

A lot of stuff, I’m sure, but I was just looking for one of its inhabitants:

.

.

.

.

Gulf Coast Waterdog (Necturus beyeri)

I had my dip net in tow, just in case, but I got lucky with a minnow trap.
The real purpose of the trip was to get into an area that supports awesome herp diversity. Unfortunately, I didn’t see much of the diversity, but it was strangely enjoyable to wade through muck, smilax, blackberries, spider webs, etc. Luckily, the mosquitoes were nice, and I haven’t found a tick on me, yet? Ahhh, the great memories of spending time in the field

Other herps seen:
Southern Copperhead
Texas Rat Snake
Buttermilk Racer (lifer for me, but it was active, and I wasn’t quick enough…damn)
Ground Skink
Five-lined Skink
Basking turtles that I didn’t take the time to ID.
