Depending on how big the ball python is, a male hogg may not exceed it's legth (you said you want a snake that's a bit larger.) I like the Dumeril idea. They usually stay the ideal size, they can be really placid, and they are a great example of a species that is declining in the wild and needs to be protected, a message that needs to get across.
