most common opinion i find is one square foot per foot of snake. so in that case a six foot snake would require a six square foot cage (say 3'x2'). a eight foot snake would require a eight square foot cage (say 2'x4'). personally i keep males in 2'x4'(eight square feet) cages and females in 2'x6'(twelve square feet) cages. the more space you can give the better (as long as its properly heated).
