Picking up

I need advice on picking up my 3 month old Beardie. All I manage to do is give him a workout by running him around the enclosure. That is when he is not gaping at me. What should I do? All I get from other forums is go in from the front/side. I need more advice. Should I be more aggresive going after him? I really want my beardie to like me.
