KCRG (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) 10 November 05 Woman Finds Turtle in Coffee (Claire Kellett)
Cedar Rapids: Sugar or cream? That's what most people add to their coffee, but one woman in Ainsworth wishes her coffee didn't come with an "animal additive."
We're all familiar with the slogan, "The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup." But what if you found a dead reptile in your package of coffee? Well, Marge Morris says she drank turtle coffee. For a coffee lover like her, the morning routine wouldn't be complete without a cup of coffee. But Sunday's brew didn't taste right to Morris.
"I had my sips of coffee, and I thought this tastes a bit bitter," said Morris.
Her taste buds detected something out of the ordinary, but it was her eyes that saw something bizarre.
"I could see like a hard spot like a rock or something. I thought I've got to find out what it is. So, I pulled it out and that's when I found Mr. Turtle."
It was a two inch turtle, in one piece, at the bottom of Morris' bag of Folgers Classic Roast Coffee. The next day Morris called the company, and she said a Folgers employee told her it was probably packaged in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The plant reopened September 18, and it makes more than half of Folgers' products.
Sussane Dussing, a spokeswoman for Procter and Gamble, which owns Folgers, said there wasn't enough evidence, yet, to explain the turtle.
Morris says she's not mad. Her preferences have just changed a little.
"Today I have some tea. It's safer because it's in a bag."
Morris said she won't file a lawsuit against Folgers. In fact, she threw out the package of coffee, but she's storing Mr. Turtle in her freezer as a keepsake.
Dussing said she's not aware of any other reports like this. She said the company will begin a full investigation after it talks to Morris.

MT. PLEASANT NEWS (Iowa) 09 November 05 We've heard of turtle soup, but, turtle coffee?
Ainsworth (Golden Triangle News Service): An Ainsworth woman was surprised to find added flavor in her morning coffee, Monday, when she brewed a cup of Folgers freeze-driedgrounds.

Taking her first few sips, Marjorie Morris decided her coffee was especially bitter. She searched the vacuum-sealed bag of coffee and found ensconced in the grounds a small, dead, freeze-dried turtle.
Roughly the size of a half dollar, the turtle had its head, legs and a long tail protruding from its shell. It was as dry as the coffee grounds that encased it.
Morris had no trouble exchanging her coffee for another package at the local grocery where she first bought the reptile-infested coffee.
Folgers, reported Morris, when contacted yesterday morning, claimed that the turtle must have sneaked into the coffee in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the Gulf Coast and upset both industry and ecosystems there.
Morris said the Folgers rep she spoke with claimed coffee marketed in the Midwest is packaged in New Orleans.
Morris said finding the turtle in the coffee brought to her mind the possibility that other southern critters could infiltrate the US food supply as hurricane clean-up continues.
"We could get a lot more in a lot of different kinds of food," she said.
