Adam - some of the old timer's here will remember that plastic canvas is my answer for just about anything. It is great for covering plant soil. If you don't know what it is, it is used in crafts and can be bought in sheets at any store that sells craft items (Michael's, Wal-Mart, etc.) and is very cheap - cpomes in some cool colors if you want to get it to match your cham - .
Anyway, you can cut it to size and and put it on top of soil and hold in place with paper clips. It comes in 2 size meshes #7 and #10 (number of holes per inch). The female cricket could still fit her ovipositor b/t the mesh, but less likely. The best answer is to not leave any in there or at least not as many try to get the adult females out.
