I'd separate them.
Long story of how I saw this but the end of the story is... I met a woman who has 2 male RES, she had no idea they were both male. They fight, she didn't seem to care, one of them was missing toes, not just nails but entire toes. I told her to separate them I never saw her again.. no telling what she did with them.
A Rubbermaid storage box can make a great extra tank. You can buy used filters & other equipment at garage sales, flea markets, eBay. There are ways to get another tank going for less money than having to buy all new stuff at the pet store. Check around & see what you can find, & good luck!
