In this instance they were refering to something called the Patagonian cavy which is different than the animal you mentioned which is AKA the guinea pig. There was a picture along with the article which showed the more exotic patagonian cavy. It looked like a smaller version of the capybara. Very different indeed from the guinea pig. You are right though. Guinea pigs have been domesticated for much longer than hamsters.
