Hi,
"Finsch's" Monitor was named/described after Ornithologist Otto Finsch. It is known to New Britain, Halmaheira, and Cape York Peninsula, Australia = so it has a vast range, and (probably) an archaic one.

They frequent damp areas, jungle environs, and are little known of in the wild = there is a recent article by Dr. Jim McGuire (UCB) in "Amphibians and Reptile Conservation" Journal (= www.herpetofauna.org).

I co-authored an article on closely related V. doreanus in Reptiles, Feb. 2002, 10(2):76-82.

Happy Christmas and Merry Holidays...
