sounds crazy to me, but may not be all that out of the ordinary.... Depending on how long they've been in together with intentions of breeding, and also depending on which snake usually houses the cage, it could be somewhat normal.
Not everybody has this problem, but some people report that introducing the male into the females cage, may stir up the female because the females are typically bigger, and needless to say, the aggressor. It is not unusual for the female to attack a male introduced into her cage. For this reason, a lot of people place the female in the males cage.
Not sure if this is the situation with your snakes, but it very well may be. If you did put the male in the females cage, I might suggest reversing that, and watch very carefully.
