Question regarding IJ carpets

I was wondering if it is ok to sex young Irian Jayas? I know with green tree pythons you are never to sex a neonate do to their fragile spines? Is this the case with carpets also? Also are carpets nocturnal? I just got my first and was curious if they wil be more active in the evening or during the day? Thanks
