Light phase/dark phase question

Luke_Hunt Aug 19, 2006 01:44 PM

We've only had our boa for a little over two weeks now. He is eating well and seems quite happy. I've read some things on the forum about light phase and dark phase and I don't know what that means. Is a dark phase normal? What brings on the shifts? My son noticed that our boa is getting a little darker, and getting some small dark spots. Normal, or something that needs our attention?

Hi,

Some one recently posted a light/dark picture that is pretty cool. The topic is titled "WOW! WHAT A DIFFERENCE!" by SPJ01 on aug 14 2006 (should be on the second page of the current boa forum). It should give you a good idea of the differences in light and dark although some boas are a little more subtle

Also, most boas get darker when they are going into a shed phase. Make sure to increase humidity a bit if you think your snake is going to shed - they get darker, then the eyes get cloudy, then the eyes clear up, and a few days later, they will be ready to shed.

Some boas like Hog Islands get paler at night and darker during the day. Some boas just get darker occasionally... mood snakes? Boas tend to look best/brightest right after a good shed.
