I own a ball python. and am planning on getting a columbian boa... i was just wondering why all the red tail boas they have for sale around here are grey... anfd on most the posts show pictures of tanned or cream colors..... sorruy if its a stupid question... but hey how do u learn without asking??? thnx

Actually, that's a pretty good question. I can't say I really know why, but I have a few ideas. Most boas can change colors to a degree, so this could account for some differences. Also, I think most baby colombian bci's start gray and change some with age. Another explanation could be that many of the boas being offered for sale originate from a certain locality and the older ones people have on here came from different places when they got them. Hopefully someone else can say "Don't listen to Kevin, he's stupid." and give you a real answer. But until then, that's the best I can do.

Most of the bci's you're going to see ("common red tails"
for sale are very young. The cream color you're seeing in the pics posted are of animals that have begun their color change. The change happens at various times for various animals and it's a rare animal that doesn't change from the gray baby it once was.

When I bought my bci as a baby about the width of a couple pencils he was that speckle grey your probably seeing. Now four years later hes a nock out white cream with a brighter tail than before. but some times his colour gets darker (almost chocolate brown) so yah, colour change happens for a variety of reasons, age seems to be a big factor
as far as I know.. yellow pigment develops the slowest and
gradually over time. (Also in corn snakes, the yellow is
the last color to fully develop, most corns get yellow over
the first 2 years) Boas slowly add more yellow base pigment
as they age which is why a nice gray baby will turn into a
tan adult.
