Suriname Syndrome Prevalence

fatjayhawk Aug 10, 2003 09:52 PM

I've seen information suggesting that Surinames are especially susceptible to reguritation syndromes. Are others finding this to be common with CB's? Is this just specific to Surinames or similarly common to other BCC's like Guyanas and Peruvians?

Thanks,

Eric

I would say this can be the case for ALL imported or captive hatched/born bcc or bci. Animals that have not been acclimated yet tend to display this in the beginning...

We hear about it most often in Bcc's. They seem to be particularly prone to it during their first year and generally can't handle the same size meals as a similarly sized Bci. Don't get me wrong, even juvie Bci's don't have the digestive capability of a similarly sized burm or retic, but they are a little hardier overall than their Bcc cousins. I've found that with the little guys, it's better to let them fully process and eliminate each meal before feeding them again. I just went through this with my little male Guyana this past winter and he got deathly thin. I really thought I was going to lose him, but he pulled through with flying colors and is doing fine now.
