02 Sunset Hypo Het Pic

KathieD Aug 12, 2003 11:42 PM

Hello. I've been hanging around here for a while and don't post much. Just took a few pics of my kids and figured I'd try to post it. Let's see if this works. Let me know what you think of him.

WOW, Just so I am clear on this het thing...If you breed that to another het you should get sunsets, hypos, and pure hoggs in the litter? Is that how that would work, or am I just way off in lala land In my understanding that this is a cross, not a genetic morph?

Randall_Turner Aug 14, 2003 10:31 AM

Apparently the Sunset hets must be a het albino, or het anery boa, seeing how the sunset is a hogg crossed hypo boa, and cannot be het anything unless the previously mentioned is the case. And for them to advertise them as a het for anything must be a way for them to rip people off unless it turns out being a sunset het albino or anery, or any other actual recessive trait.

Yeah I have some inherent distrust in sunset boas. They are cool looking snakes, don't get me wrong. But not 12,000 snakes by any stretch of the imagination. The person I have seen selling them hasn't clarified anything about them. Over time he has declarified things. At first they were listed as being the result of breeding a hypo X hog to a super hypo. OK that means the babies are possibly super hypo with a decent F number (I would guess) that have some hogg island blood in them. but that has since been taking off his site. If this is the case well the results of breeding this would be super hypos, hypos both with some hogg blood in there. How the hypo het for sunglow gets in there is well beyond me. To me they look like really nice hypos, similar to the f4 hypos produced. Think that as hypos are breed to hypos you lose more and more pattern (or so it seems). Also more and more pattern abnormalities occur. This is what I think is the case with the sunset hypos. Very reduced pattern hypo that is very clean, similar to when hypos are breed to hypos after several generations. Is it me or does anyone else think this might be what is at play here?

Hi Everyone,

This snake was sold to me in October 2002 at the Chicago show along with another male and a female. They were called "Hets". The way I understood the genetics is that you are right. In a litter you would have sunsets, hypos, hoggs and the like. I have labeled him as a Het Sunset because that's what the breeder called him. The Sunset is an incredibly awesome looking boa that needs to be seen in person to appreciate the subtle color changes and pattern. I agree with you that this is not a $12000.00 snake. It is however a beautifiul color morph and think that it should be marketed as such. I purchased my 3 "hets" for way less than say a snow would cost. I think that it has its merits and would look neat say as a pastel sunset or something along that line. I do not think that anyone should rip anyone else off. I too would like to see something spelled out in concrete as to how these were created. All in all, I had to have them because I fell in love with that little guy. LOL.

Oh understandable. For that price that could be reasonable. I know at one point about 8 months ago someone was selling sunsets for 5000, still high in my book. the price then suddenly skyrocketed up to 12000 now i don't see a price listed anywhere.

Hi,

I think that if they were priced under the $3000.00 range (for the sunsets - less for the crosses which I guess is what their calling them now) it would be appropriate. They are a really nice looking color morph, there isn't a high number of them and you really don't know where you can go with them yet. I think the pastel could be interesting or if you could produce a sunglow with the sunset pattern. I thought it might be a different project with potential. I can tell you that I would not pay more than I paid though.

also, I did notice that the descriptions changed and less
of a mention of them being hog locality crosses was removed..
also an ad was posted for hypos from hypoxhypo and the
link brought to the album selling the sunsets, with no
mention in the ks ad that they had hog blood in them..
just seemed fishy to me... just seems this should be
cleared up so people realize they are locailty mixes and it
won't mess up someone else's breeding projects.
All in all as with anything, as long as you're happy with
it that's what matters, but if you plan to breed and sell
offspring, the genetics need to be cleared up.
