do snakes appreciate shelves in their cages or are they usesless? do they need a barrier at the edge of the self and how high should it be?

Depends on your personal preference. I would not say they are useless, but they can take up space if you are running short on it. Shelves can have advantages. It can give the snake a place to climb (exercise if you will), it can be used to thermoregulate (it is warmer at the top of the cage sense heat rises), and just a place for it to "hang out". I do not think a barrier is needed. They know what it is to fall and most likely would not do so on purpose. As far as heigth, just depends on you and how much space you want to use.
