You may want to consider a Brazilian Rainbow Boa then. Fits all of your criteria...except the 40 gallon is a little small, maybe get a male.

That thought has been in my head for a few months and i can provide the care it needs but i am not sure about the temperament. But i guess if i want to be a herpetologist when im older im gonna have to take a bite sooner or later. Beautiful Creatures!!!

In my experience they are nippy as babies but quickly tame. I haven't had any problems at all with my adults. They aren't exactly "lap snakes" like Ball Pythons are but aren't flighty like Corn snakes either. Kinda somewhere in between.
