How big do female boas need to be to breed?

I personally don't breed any of my boas that are under 6 feet in length and at least four years old. I tend to feed my boas less heavily than the average keeper and intentionally grow them slower so that they have time to both reach a sexually mature size and age. I've only produced one litter so far (in 2000) and the female had 18 healthy young with no slugs or stillborns. I also give the female better than a full year off - in other words, skip a season between breeding attempts. That way she gives birth the summer after a successful breeding, and isn't bred again until the fall of the following year.
If you don't succeed on your first try, don't be disappointed. My first attempt worked, last year's attempt with a new female didn't. I think that was mostly because I separated them too early. I'd recommend leaving them together until you're sure she's gravid, then remove the male.
