Reputable dealers at Reptile Shows?

jsanborn40 Sep 11, 2003 12:23 PM

I went to my first reptile show last weekend in White Plains, NY. I have to say that I was very impressed, to say the least. I am currently looking to purchase another snake(either dumerils boa or blood python) and at the show there were plenty to choose from. My concern is how do I know who is a reputable dealer and who is just trying to make some money? Everyone I spoke with said that their reptiles are captive bred, healthy and eating well. I guess I am asking how do I know who is telling the truth and who is selling wild caught animals? I know all about looking for mites, ticks, and signs of RI but signs of parasites may not show until I have the snake for a while. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Ask for pics of the parents, their setups and visit their websites if they have one. How long they have been involved with reptiles is important but may not always mean they are good. Word of mouth is probably the best way to tell if they are good, and there is also a website you can visit to check to see if breeder's have had positive or negative feedback. Here is a link.
