Is Cay pronounced "kay" or "key"?

A buddy of mine from Honduras corrected me when I said "kay", he told me it was pronounced "key" like Key West.

I do believe it is pronounced "key". I have visited the Islands off the cost of Belize and they pronounced it "key".
