peteralbrian Sep 18, 2003 02:49 PM

i don't have acceess to jumbo or colassal rat but only to large ones. they are however quite small for my 5 feet boas. can i feed them 2 large or medium ones in 1 seesion?

i heard about food not getting digested properly when using multiple food items and i am concerned.

thanks

It's only an issue if the 2 rats combined are more than the snake can digest. I've found most snakes are capable of saying "when" at a single sitting.

I'd recommend getting yourself a good supplier of larger prey animals. It's cheaper.

Food doesn't get digested if the temps are not adequate around the whole boa or if for some reason the boa doesn't have the digestive juices/bacteria to handle the job due to stress or poor health, or if the meal is just too big. It has nothing to do with the number of prey items, but more the total mass of the meal.

The bottom line, make sure the meal, whether one big rat or two smaller rats, is not too much for your boa. Always err on less or smaller food if not sure. Your boa won't starve, believe me.
