I'm looking to get a smaller subspecies (4-6 ft.) of boa constrictor (not rosy, rubber, or sand), and I need a little advice derived your collective experience. I have a six year old step son who is going to be handling the animal, so I need some advice on the varying dispositions of the animals.
I've read that the Dumerils can be quite snappy, and some don't tame down with handling. Is this a well deserved reputation? How do Hogg Island or Nicaraguans generally do?
Any advice on a species or locale to zero in on would be appreciated. And, if you have one, a recommendation for a good captive bred supplier would be nice.

If I, in your position, would have to choose from the 3, I would choose a Hogg Island Boa. In my opinion, the cleanest, prettiest, best sized, most robust animal.
Nicaraguans can be fairly nippy and they are usually dark, even when clean and colorfull.
My female Dumerils boa right now is about 8 1/2 feet long and larger than all but 2 of my 100 boas !!!
My Beautiful Lemke Hogg Island Pair are under 5 feet at the time, and are mature adults.
They somtimes appear a deep Orange, sometimes a Luminescent Pink, sometimes very blue and other times just clean and white.
They never fail to put a smile on my face - always seem to astonish me as if they were the first snake i've ever owned.

They do not always photograph as well as other boas but are very nice looking in person. I just got a three foot yearling (my 2nd one) form exotic encounters in Colorado. He still has two yearlings on the classifieds now. In the photo my looked brown, but when I got it, it was a deep orange and very stunning. All of the ones that I have personly seen have been tame.

Perhaps I have just been lucky, but I have had several Dumerils Boas and each one was tame and easy to handle. They did have an explosive feeding response, but no more than my other Boas.

Great small Boa Constrictor Imperator. VERY gentle snakes. Only get around 5'. I love mine !!! They are around $200 each. Not everyone has them as they are somewhat rare. Only live on 1 Island off the coast of Belize.

How about a Corn Island Boa. Kind of rare but beautiful.

You may want to look into a Brazilian Rainbow, in appearance they are one of my favorite snakes next to the Gaboon Viper(drool,y do they have to be venomous?) but anyway BRBs have a lot of fanciers but I have heard conflicting answers about their temperement.
