If you're using a latex (water-based) paint, I would remove the animals just while you're painting and then, if the ventilation is reasonable, return them to their homes...However, if you're using an oil-based (alkyd) paint, you'll want to give the animals at least 24 hours away from the fumes. Again, I'm responding based on my own experience/concerns as a house painter, but snakes are fairly resilient animals, and the latex paints shouldn't bother them too much.
