im sorta new to the boa world, and i was wodnering whats the difference between these snakes, is it just their design or colors that they are born with?thanks, also and also if somebody could giveme a link, like a care sheet that tells everything about how to care for boas and everything, i really want to know EVERYTHING about the boa before i get him.thanks

The term REDTAIL was, until fairly recently, only applied to the Boa constrictor constrictor sub-species, commonly abbreviated as BCC. This has implications of morphology, behavior, squamation (scalation) and range in nature, IE: Suriname, Peru, Guyana, et-al.

Now, while BCC is found in Colombia, the vast majority of the Colombian boas imported, sold, bred and then also sold or traded are Boa constrictor imperator, or BCI.. Which is distinct from the BCC, in range, looks and so on..

Among the more scientific-oriented group of keepers and breeders the term Redtail is only properly applied to BCC and the Colombian boas we most often see in the trade are Common boas or Common Colombian boas. This is not saying anything bad about the BCI or people (like me) who keep them and enjoy them, it is just a way to get around the 'How do I know, what are the differences?' questions.

It is popularly believed that the term Colombian redtail (applied to common BCI) was an invention of the dealers and resellers who wanted to raise the price of and interest in the 1000s of $20 BCI they were buying and selling each year. It has worked!

I wonder if the application of the term "redtail" to colombian bci helped to lessen the stigma of crossing ssp? basically, did the over-promotion and mis-application of the term aid in lowering the general publics guard and sensitivity to the importance of purity among ssp? have they REALLY thought about what is TRULY going on?

.. if more people knew more and cared more about the natural history, taxonomy and origins of the animals that would have to be taken into account before they bought a boa or attempted breeding.

Let's not start any flame-game here. I've said a dozen times that the morphs have value and many of them are the result of lots of work. This is not about locality vs morph, it is all about learning and understanding more so we can all get more out of our hobby.
