A friend told me that frisky's cat food is more prone to cause kidney problems? Is this true?

Not in general, no.

However, in a cat that already has early renal failure, feeding them a regular grocery brand food keeps the failure moving right along, whereas feeding them a prescription renal diet from the vet will help slow the process down and hopefully help the cat to live longer.
