i was thinking of breeding geckoes when i stumbled across leos. I was wondering if you could breed leos from the same clutch? I read that a breeder had a leo that he bred it to its mother. is it possible for me to do this? thanks!

yes you could do this but it isn't recommended its best to have
two differant blood lines.

i am an expirenced herper, never had any geckoes, so i would like to become a small breeder... i would like to find a pair at an expo that is juvenile age, i like albinos, and i was wondering any other than normals and high yellows that are cheaper than other colors, like blazin blizzard, i have over 75$ inmy fund for a lizard and i will have two empty 10 gallon tanks, and empty 5 gallon tank; should i get another 10 gallon? also, any more on breeding is needed! thanks

a 5 gallon is too small for one leo... also, it's recommended that leos be of certain size and weight before breeding.. you might want to wait til the juvie is an adult. if you have one male and one female, a 15 - 20 gallon tank may be recommended for breeding. i'm not sure which ones are the cheapest because it depends a lot on the pattern & colors on the leo, as well as the breeder - i've seen some breeders charge a whole lot more for their leos than others... so it might be a good thing to check online prices and diff. breeder prices at an expo

i know to breed when they are adults, i would just want 2 raise them up. i read on sites a 1.1 pair could be housed in a 10 gallon? i will most likely get an albino leo, my mom likes em and i like em to. on one site they had normals and high yellows for 1o$ and albinos for 20$. Someone also said at the daytona expo they had a pair for 30$. I was just wondering if that would be a good hobby for me to breed leos...

oh ok, i was wondering if you were gonna get them at the juvie age to breed oops! that'd be cool if you raise them up, that's what i'm trying to do with the one leo i got so far, i've read and heard that it's best to house 2 leos in at least 15 gallons, but i guess we'll see when more people reply and albinos are cool, i thought i wouldn't want one, but i'm already in love with my little boy i wanna keep albinos, blizzards, and normals.. other than that i don't think i'd want it - but that's just me, personally. if you want to raise a lot of leos and keep them as a hobby, then you could breed for self savings, but if you want to sell them and make more money, it might be better to get those crazy orange ones... i don't really like them but i saw some guy that sold one for $400. it's crazy cuz i don't think i'd spend that much hehe~ but i want to breed in the future, so if you have the room, it might be fun to breed leos many ppl on this forum are pretty good breeders. i plan to buy from a couple of them sometime next year after the housing extension is done & i have more room

On the whole cage note, I kept my geckos in a 10 gallon when they were young adults because I was strapped for cash and couldn't afford to buy a larger cage. But I made my mom finally buy me a 20G long, so now they are happy. But when I get my first pay check I'm going to make them a custom cage because I'm not satisfied with the ones in the pet stores. All the one's I could find were either all focused around length or heighth, none of them really in depth. So yeah, lol...

i have an empty 10 gallon tank so thats why, i will probably breed albinos, because theyre affordable and different, , the orange lookin ones are too rich for my blood, lol. I might consider it, if i could find them less expensive.() i might ship them, but i think it would mostly be for my expo...any more input from anybody?

one other thing, what can i get by breeding an albino to a different morph, any ideas for more "exotic" colors? thanks, i like albinos so i guess i would at least get one...

A ten gallon is plenty big for a pair of juvenile leopard geckos. In fact in you get hatchlings, they actually do better in an even smaller enclosure, like a plastic shoebox, until they are a little bigger (4-5 inches). But a ten gallon will be fine. When they are full grown adults, a ten gallon can (barely) house two adults if you make creative use of vertical space, e.g. hides they can climb on, 2-story hides. But by the time they are adults, you can probably get a 20 gallon and use the ten gallon for babies. You'll need a lot of housing for babies....

Albinos can be outcrossed with tangerines, hypos, snows, melanistic geckos, patternless, striped, blizzard...and bred back (brothers to sisters, yes this is line bred/inbred) to (hopefully) create the combination morphs you are seeking. However this will take several years to get the results you want. If you want to do this you are better off getting animals already het for the traits you want. But $75 is not much money for a pair of leos with any kind of fancy so you will be limited by your budget. Keep your eyes out though, sometimes you can get a real steal at a show. Just remember that a sick-looking skinny gecko is NEVER worth it, you can pay more in one vet visit that your entire leo budget. And speaking of which, I would not recommend buying any leos at all until you have saved enough to cover vet care if they need it. It's irresponsible to get any kind of pet unless you are prepared, in terms of time, effort and money, to care for it properly in sickness and in health.

i have only been savin for a month about and im continuing this fund so it wont be limited. if i can find a healthy inexpensive tangerine, if i bred that with a albino, would it only be a normal het. albino het. tangerine? thanks, i still would like more input!

I think I answered this in your later post. Breeding a Albino to anything but the same type of Albino will produce normal hets which could be bred back to the parents. Like noted before its a long process to get your desired results. If you like Albinos I would start with 2, they could be diff colors(yellow/tang). Just be sure you get two of the same type of Albinos. Has adults you will need at least a 20 gal to house 2 Leos. Prices vary alot but sometimes you get what u paid for. Good luck with your quest.

You would get all hets for albino. There is no such thing as het for tangerine, it is a selectively bred rait, not a recessive trait. Depending on the color of the albino and how tangerine your tangerine is, and your luck, the geckos may look anything from tan to yellow to tangerine. The more tangeriner the tangeine is the more likely offspring will be tangerine. Tangerine is all a matter of degrees. Some tangerines are more tangerine than others, the more color in parents the more likely it will show up in offspring, even if diluted by non-tangerine stock.

Of course there is always the possibility that your tangerine might be het for albino, and if it is you could get some albinos from that breeding. This is called "getting lucky". I mention this possibility because it happened to me this year when I bred my hypotang CT albino male to a superhypotang CT girl...I was suprised and delighted to have an albino hatch from that first clutch. The hypotang female I have turned out to be het albino.I was doing the happy dance, and still am as that gecko has turned out male and is on his way to going all orange.
