Live - F/T in Dumeril's Boas

tim16a May 25, 2004 02:33 PM

Ok, almost everyone has had that one (or more) snake that won't take F/T mice, rats etc. I have a couple different ways to convert live feeders. Was wondering what works for all of you. IMO dumeril's boas are the hardest to break their habbits such as getting them to eat rats and getting them to take F/T. Especially at older ages. I want to hear some creative stuff.

I usually trick them by dipping a f/t mouse in very warm water and tease feeding it to the snake using tongs. If it moves, smells like a mouse and gives off heat as if alive, then usually the snake will eat it.

The way that works the best for me is to offer live pray, smaller than you would normally feed the snake. Then as soon as he/she finishes swallowing i offer a F/T prey item of similar size. With their feeding response still in full tilt from the first kill they will normally take the F/T. The next time i try without the live. If they still won't take, I start over again. With time, they all seem to take.
