Keeping Kimberleys...

eastlandpets Jun 23, 2003 12:47 AM

I'm looking into getting a colony of kimberley rock monitors, and hoping to breed them. Trouble is, there's nearly no info out there on them. if any of you have some tips on the general care and breeding of them, i'd love to hear from you. also, i've found adult animals at shows for 400-500, but all the large-scale breeders i've seen are asking 650-750 for their animals. any private breeders willing to beat these prices? if you do i have a gargoyle monitor ($89), a young male nile ($79), 2 red savannahs (69 ea), and 2 red tegus (250pr), which i would be willing to trade. thanks.

Sorry, I do not do trades that do not benefit my breeding projects.

As far as prices, you are seeing worn out breeders, poor animals that will die or lone males for those prices. I sell my glaeurti for what they are worth, $750. I will sell them for less in lots.

Kimberly care: I keep my breeders in 7 foot cages. I supply them with a good digging substrate. I keep one side of the cage more moist then the other. I give them a stack and 3 hides. The ambient temp in my enclosures is 88, with a 150 degree basking. They seem to do well in these temps. I feed them crickets, roaches and fuzzies and pinkie mice. Mine breed constantly, yours may not, that is never guaranteed. Mine do not like to be touched, so I try not to. They are very beautiful and I accept them for that, kind of like a nice piece of art on the wall, only they move.

Cheers, Andrew

Thanks for the tips.

do you keep you kimberleys together or separate except to breed? it sounds like you don't use any cooling or rain cycling, from your message. is this so? also, i read else where that it is neccesary to totally soak the substrate and let it dry once a week. is this true or is it a load of crap?

i may talk to you about your babies later, once i get some things settled.

thanks-

LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE:
1.2 Kimberely rock monitor
1.1 Baja Cape Gophers
ANY Dendrobates pumillio
ANY Eastern glass lizards
thx.

Sorry, I do not have any of those animals. If i were to sell adults it would be because they were worn out breeders, and I would state that, or I would be very desperate, I do not ever foresee the latter.

It is not true that Kimberlys need to be cycled, I have never seen this as being needed in any of my monitor breeding efforts. Also, the soaking it and letting it dry thing, yes I have heard this, no I do not do it, yes my kimberlys are healthy.

Feel free to call and chat or email me. Thanks, Andrew
