You might want to be careful when feeding, While it is aesthetically appealing, it can cause compactions if ingested (as it did in my small blackthroat). I would use a different container to feed or change the substrate altogether. Nothing beats plain old dirt...it's cheap and easy get most of the time. Many people try too hard to make the enclosure "look good." Monitors have been known to die from compactions, especially young ones. It's just not worth it! I'm unsure, but if kept wet, it also might mold(?)
Just my thoughts and experiences, hope it helps,
Tim
Thanks! Hes always had an empty cage for feeding since I saw him get a mouth full of peat moss. After I cleaned that of the moss came out and sand went in but he eats in a different cage. I don't know if the bark will mold, but i'll see. I'll have to talk later I have to take an application to the vets office so maybe I can work their this summer.

it is definitely cheaper to keep the little beasties on dirt or, as i do, on a dirt/sand mixture. you can get a 40 lb bag of topsoil from home depot for $1 and a 50 lb bag of filter sand for $5.
