still acting strange

spot012 Jan 02, 2005 02:16 PM

I posted a few days ago my leo was acting strange ever since we put him in his new home. He's still hiding under the paper towel and I'm not sure if he actually ever comes out from under it. Would it be better if we put him back in his old home and set it back up the way it was? I know he'll eventually get over the stress but he's worrying me. So if anyone could please help I'd appriciate it a lot! Thanks in advance!

you could put him back in his old home if you think he's that stressed. I.ve never seen a leo take more than a day to get used to a new enclosure, though I've read posts here about it taking several days.

Some ideas about the new enclosure. First, use as much of the old cage furniture in the new enclosure as possible, at least until he perks up. Second, think like a leo, and see if you can think of anything about the new enclosure that might be really bothering him, more than just the fact that its new. Is it in a different place and the new location is more public? as in people, cats, dogs, noise, etc. DOes the new cage have a scary smell (like new plastic or the cage used to house a snake and it still smells like snake). Or is he under the paper towels becuase he's cold and he's hugging the under-tank heater? stuff like that.

Well, it's in the exact same room and ALL of the furniture is the same. Everythings in almost the same spot except I switched the warm and cold sides. There isn't anything new in the tank. The side of the towels he's hiding under is on the cool side. The tank hasn't ever been used before. I don't know...he's really starting to worry me.

is he still digging? how many days since he ate? (is this a baby or an adult?) or maybe is he about to shed?

Can they smell snake and is that scary to them? I have three snakes on the shelf right above my gecko.

I don't know for sure how leopard geckos feel about snakes. Yes I'm pretty sure they can smell them. It's just something I always consider if I'm trying to figure out why an animal is stressed. Ever since I realized that my water dragon went into a wild self-damaging panic whenever I wheeled the boa cage into the same room as her.

But I have some tiny snakes near some of my leos and they have no problem with it that I can see.
