Is it safe to put geckos of different age groups in the same tank?

GreedyG2004 Jan 03, 2005 08:57 AM

Happy new Year!

I have a question about my geckos. I bought my first leopard gecko (Artemis) in March 2004... it was about 2 weeks old. I bought my other 2 (Sasha and Hermione) in September 2004 and they were both roughly about 2 weeks old. Well I'm going to them Maryland Reptile Show this wekeend in hopes of finding a Blizzard or a Snow. In any case, I only have room for 2 tanks....Artemis has a 20 gallon long to herself and the other 2 share a 20 gallon long. I was wondering if it would be okay to put Sasha and Hermione in Artemis's tank so that I can have the other tank for whatever I manage to buy this weekend? I wasn't too sure ocnsidering the size and age different of the 2 I have...

(I will post pix later)

Basic rule of thumb is 10 gallons per leo. I'm not an expert but, the older leo may bully around the younger ones. This can cause stress and lack of appitite in the younger ones. I would get a leo about the same age as your first leo and put those two together in the same tank and keep the two younger ones in their current tank. Make sure you don't house two males together in the same tank. Also, quarentine your new leo before you introduce it into your current group. You wouldn't want to bring home a sick leo and contaminate your current leos.

It generally not a good idea to put different sized leos in with each other. The bigger ones will bully around the smaller ones and the smallers wont get food like they should. Also, a 20 gallon isn't big enough for 3 leopard geckos. 1 Leo should have 10 gallons of space. So 3 should have a 30 gallon tank. You're better off buying a 10 gallon for your new leopard gecko.

A 10 gallon tank (including lid) is only $8 at Petsmart.

If you are getting a new leo you should just give him/her a tank for itself. (if the oldest gecko you have is a girl I suggest getting another female about the same age as the one you have) quarantine the new one for 2 weeks and then see if the new one and the old one get along and if so then you can put her in the tank with your other female (if you want babies then get a male but you might as well get a female).

do not put young leos of undetermined sex together. they may breed too early and cause problems and/or death
do not put young leos of different sizes together. big ones may bully the others, or just scare them enough so they dont eat
do not quarantine a new gecko for only 2 weks!! IF you know the breeder/source, you may go as short as a month-6 weeks, but at any rate, get fecal done before combining anyone.
if im right, the two are female, and the other one Artemis is a male? problem

I went to the one last year in March which is where I bought Artemis. I bought her from Billie from Hartford Reptile Center (www.pythons.com). Very nice and informative people.

GreedyG2004 Jan 05, 2005 08:04 AM

No Artemis is a girl. All my geckos are girls.... well the younger 2 were temp sexed to be girls.... they get along fine and one doesn't be tryin to screw the other one so I guess it's safe to say they're both females.

geckogrl6 Jan 05, 2005 11:01 AM

not neccesarily. they are a little young to be screwing yet anyway. born in the spring? Harford is OK. never bought from them, but came close. do you by chance has contact info for that show? i usually work weekends, but im gonna make it over there one of these dsays
