Brumating w/o cooling...?

phiber_optikx Feb 01, 2006 04:00 PM

The post directly under this one made me wonder.... I don't have an ideal place too cool my snakes. Is there a way to brumate them while temps are in the mid-low 70's? Or would it be better to just not attempt it at all?

I tried a late brumation last year and my females wanted nothing to do with the males. I wouldn't suggest it. Like a response to the other, most people are bringing their snakes out at this time. Just try as is, and better timing next year. I know waiting sucks, but maybe you will get lucky without the brumation.

I don't currently have any snakes old enough to brumate. My question was just on if you can brumate without reaching lower temps or if it is safer to just not try it at all.

........you can breed corns (and alot of other stuff) without doing anything........your room /cages should get a little but cooler anyways...even with heated room and heat tape even.......

so..IF you are asking can you brumate with just a little drop in temps?.yes and no....

to brumate you stop feeding for like 3 weeks then drop the temps from 80 to the 60's then even all the way down to 55 degrees F.......you can drop from 82 to 77 let's say and still feed and all just smaller meals like once a week......BUT IF you plan on stopping food and letting them go 3 months without food...you NEED to get the temps down to REAL brumation conditions.....IF a snake is not fed and is left at like 70 degrees it will not only want to eat and lose weight...the liver will change and cause problems.........(I have no scientific explaination but something changes if you starve)......

real brumations should be cold enough that a snake really won't lose any weight at all.........55 degrees is good temp

so if you cannot get cold enough just drop 5 degrees and still feed ....light cycles will change or be changed too then....

..have fun

If you brumate without reaching lower temps, the snakes won't actually entert brumation. Their digestive system won't slow down that much and they will consume their weight while you are not feeding them. Hope this helps
