Has anyone tried diatomaceous earth?

maroci Feb 01, 2006 08:48 PM

Has anyone tried using diatomaceous earth to control mites? For those who don't know, it's a very fine power, is completely non-toxic. It kills insects by physical means, by puncturing the waxy coating of their exoskeletons and dehydrating them.

The only thing I know about diatemaceous earth is that it is made up of crushed old sea shells (or some other similar material) and it is incredibly harmful to humans if inhaled (it's sharp and cuts the lungs). I'm assuming that it would be equally harmful to boids, but am not an expert.

Diatomaceous earth is a mite treatment that dates back to the 1960s if not earlier. I first heard of it under the name Dry-Die. It kills mites, but it's bad for snake lungs, too. And the more humid the air, the less effective the stuff is. As far as I know, chemical miticides are more effective. And predatory mites may be better at killing snake mites, too.
