Brumation?

buddha04 Feb 01, 2006 09:35 PM

I have 3 leos. Two adults 5-year olds and one that is 1-year old. The female 5-year old seems to be brumating right now as she has not eaten in about a month and is much thinner than her usual plump self. She is still alert and seems to be shedding a lot. I think she's on her third shed now. I've had her since she was about 3-months old and she has never slowed down like she's doing now.

The others two are leos are fine. Any thoughts?

The one thing that would bother me is her weight loss. You say she hasn't eaten in about a month and is much thinner than usual. Usually if they are truly brumating they lose very little weight. During brumation their bodies literally slow way down which is why they don't lose much weight. For example I have an adult male that began brumating 4 months ago, and ate absolutely nothing for about 3 months. During this time he only lost 5 grams of weight, going from 75 to 70 grams. He just starting eating again a week ago. On the other side I have a female who began a very mild brumation about 3 months ago, though she has never stopped eating she went from eating every day to just twice a week. She has actually gained a bunch of weight, like 15 grams, she's now upto 86 grams LOL

I would definately recommend a trip to the Vet and a fecal test just to make sure there isn't something going on with her. The fairly fast visible weight loss would have me worried.

Thanks! I've never weighed my geckos but do have a small scale. She was a very healthy eater and was very fat in the gut and tail. I guess she now looks like your average leo at Petco?

I'll look into a vet. With multiple geckos in a tank, I'll have to figure out which stool is hers.
