please post observations on courtship behavior.

adamjeffery Feb 01, 2006 11:29 PM

I am just wondering if all corns generally have the same courtship behavior, but i never see any posts or info on this. I have read about neck biting but have never witnessed it with mine.
With mine, the male usually does the corting by following the female around the cage and gently rubbing against her while jerking abruptly every second or so, the female "usually" slowely meanders threw the cage until she gives in. So far this year she just plain tries to get away. I introduced them early to try and stimulate her into breeding early. She is definetly not receptive yet but in the last week between introductions the male has become more stimulated by her presance and activly persues her.
I have only introduced her twice at about 30 min each time, she has not yet shed but she didnt her first year either but i did wait each subsiquent year after. im hopin for an early clutch is all. but please post your observations.
thank you adam

Last year was my first year trying to breed my corns. I did not do a full brumation. I tried a late one and it did not work. Even after the shed, the females just ran away from the males. The males were more than eager. They twitched, chased, but the females just avoided the males. I have yet to try this year. I just brought my snakes out of brumation last week. I will post again when my females shed. Sorry I could not offer more.

Never knock on Death's door. Ring the bell and run. He hates that!

I've been breeding Corns on and off for ten years and I've never witnessed any biting.

The jerking and chasing is all I've ever seen and this can get very energetic - I occasionally have to separate a prospective pair because the male is trying too hard with a female that's plainly not receptive at that point in time.

I've never been able to correllate mating with the female shedding in my lot - they don't seem to care one way or the other.

That's funny, because I just put my pair together and it is the female that seems ready and the male is hiding in his hide. They both shed this past week and I put the female into the male's cage. She has been there for about 1 hour now. The male won't come out of his hide though. I haven't had them professionally sexed as adults, but the male has a longer, thicker tail than the female. The female was jerking as soon as she smelled him.
