New to leopards . have a tank question... Pleas help

porkchop48 Feb 02, 2006 09:33 AM

I have a very large enclosure about 6 ft tall and 5 ft wide and 1 1/2 ft deep. I was wanting to put leopards in it right now it has a coconut bark bedding , well planted with dome drift wood and a ten gallon tank with balloon mollies in the bottom. Wouls this be ok for leopard geckos ? do they climb at all? how many could i put in there? I do have other lizards and frogs so im not new to herp keeping but would like to put something in this tank that i can breed that will utilize the whole tank. Also if they dont climb alot can i put ramps and such in there so they will climb more? or any suggestions on what to put in there would be great. Thanks in advance

That tank is way to big. A 10 galllon minimum and 20 gallon max.Anything too big might stress them out. Also it would make it much harder for them to hunt their food.
The bedding is not a good choice either. It is great for a humid hide but lousy for bedding. It retains too much humidity which could be a problem along with other issues. The best bedding is paper towels. They are easy to clean up and cheap. Slate tile is another alternative. It's just a little harder to clean.
You should look into gettimg a manual or book on geckos. Also you should find a vet in your area that takes reptiles. Cause you never know when you might need one.

I do already have a herp vet that i use for all my critters and i was just feeling out ideas on what could go in there. Sorry if i offended any one. I see now that leopards would not be a good idea. I do research any animal before i buy. It wasnt going to be a decision made on a whim.

LOL I'm just sitting here going WTF was that size of an enclosure originally designed for, very strange dimensions to me. And I agree, it would be way too big for Leos and the bedding is a bad idea for several reasons, humidity, feeder insects hide in it, possible impaction risk etc.

enclosure for an iguana who then got too large and now has his own room. I was thinking a large group of red eyed tree frogs but then thought of maybe leopard geckos, but from the sounds of it i guess that isnt a good idea. Any suggestions?

Chinese water dragons need a lot of room and like to climb. You could make them a sweet habitat with that cage.
