Labor Questions

floridaisstupid Feb 02, 2006 01:24 PM

I have a female redtail which is just under the 7 foot mark. I witnessed her and the male conceving around the beginning of september sometime. she defacated for the first time this morning in about 4 months and i was wondering if this would happen to be a sign of the labor process. if so or if not i was wondering if i would be able to get some information in what to look for to know when she is in labor.

From personal experience, my boa was in her hide, with her head extending out, an odd position to hold... she wasn't on her way out. I was thinking it'd be funny to see a little head poke out, and soon enough, I was right

Basking in odd positions, such as on her side, or with the belly almost upside down is sometimes seen while gravid. Signs of actual parturition (labor as you call it) I"m unsure of, except perhaps seeking out a secluded place and the actual appearance of babies.

I'm sure, like with other species, it is likely that if stressed (often because of owner's presistent presence) they may hold off the birthing process, which in extremes is unhealthy. My suggestion is to just let it happen, and view from a distance if need be.

She may not even be pregnant. Just because they were copulating does not mean they were "conceiving". She had to ovulate first...the male had to mate while she was ovulating...it had to "take", as in fertilize. 4 months is not long enough for boa gestation.
